Use of pre-treated recycled tyre rubber towards storage stable modified bituminous blends

Description

Particularly in UK, rubberised asphalt is struggling to be intensively used mainly because there is lack of trust on dry process and industry is reluctant in adapting asphalt plants to tackle the storage stability issues of rubberised binders obtained through wet process. In fact, recycled tyre rubber – bitumen blends are usually not compatible systems forcing contractors to adopt specialized expensive equipment to avoid phase separation during hot storage or transportation. This study investigates the possibilities of using selected pre-treatments to the recycled tyre rubber in order to enhance the final stability of the modified binder. Three products were used to obtain rubberised blends that were compared in terms of solubility, storage stability and rheological properties. Results show that pretreatments of the recycled tyre rubber can lead to storage stable rubberised binders with
comparable properties
