ABSTRACT: MOL Nyrt., the Hungarian multinational oil and gas company, has developed and patented a procedure for producing chemically stabilized rubber bitumen (CSRB). Pilot-scale production kicked off in 2012 and the facilities are capable of producing 5,000 tones/year of CSRB – equivalent of 150,000 tyres – in its Zala refinery.

Ever since, Hungarian clients as well as constructors have shown great interest in CSRB, including Colas Hungary.

Colas Hungary constructed asphalt layers utilizing CSRB on Hungary’s road networks first in 2013 and then in 2015. Among the constructed asphalts, some only contain new mineral aggregates, others contain reclaimed asphalt pavements. Our presentation focuses on the mechanical properties of the constructed asphalts, experiences gained around the construction of layers, as well as the behavior of the layers under traffic.

Furthermore, CSRB has also been a target of comparative studies conducted by Colas Hungary around the behavior of various bitumen types (standard and modified) in the asphalt mixture. The examined asphalt blend was a mixture of standardized composition containing a maximum grain size of 0/8 mm, in which the type of bitumen was variable. During our presentation, the results of laboratory studies (rigidity, fatigue testing, cold behavior, etc.) will also be showcased.
