Laboratorial evaluation of tire rubber use as hot mix aggregate

Description

The waste generated by the highway transport modal has motivated a series of discussions regarding the reuse of this material in roads facilities. The tire rubber is one of these materials that can be used as binder modifier or as hot mix aggregate. This work presents a research which aims the use of crumb rubber as aggregate in asphalt paving material. Hot mix asphalt was prepared with several rubber contents in addition to a control mixture. It was tested dense and gap-graded mixture gradations. The effect of rubber digestion was evaluated too. Marshall Methodology traditional parameters were complemented with dynamic indirect tensile test (resilient modulus) and indirect tensile test (tensile strength) carried out in three different temperatures, 10, 25 and 45ºC. An increment was observed in the project asphalt content with the rubber addition. Regarding the values of resilient modulus was noticed a decrease of this parameter with rubber content. The digestion effect has shown to be beneficial in mechanical behavior of asphalt mixes. The relation resilient modulus/tensile strength of the rubber mixes indicates a better behavior compared to the control mixture, mainly in lower temperatures.
