ABSTRACT: Millions of scrap tires are generated every year in U.S. The increasing number of vehicles has resulted in increase of scrap tires throughout the country. Texas is one of the states that is generating large amount of scrap tires. Management of these scrap tires is a challenging task. Previously, scrap tires were usually dumped in landfills which was environmentally unfavorable. Recently, these scrap tires have been utilized in different roadway applications. The state of Texas has mixed rubber component from scrap tires with asphalt and used them as 1) Chip Seal or Stress Absorbing Membrane (SAM), 2) Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI), 3) Crack or Joint Sealing, and 4) Hot Mixed Asphalt construction.
One of the major uses of scrap tires is in asphalt rubber pavement construction. Research from previous studies have provided that the use of scrap tires in asphalt rubber pavement construction has helped to increase the long-term fatigue performance of pavement. This approach has helped to make proper use of scrap tires and consequently increase the service life of pavement. The state of Texas has used this approach and constructed asphalt rubber pavement throughout the state. This paper discusses the different experiences and the performance of the rubberized asphalt pavements in Texas.
