Rheological Properties of Asphalt Rubber

Description

In the last years, asphalt rubber (AR) is being used quite intensively in asphalt mixtures. It is, therefore, necessary to describe the physical-mechanical properties of this highly viscous binder in detail.
This paper describes laboratory preparation of ARs with various ambient crumb rubber content. Needle penetration, softening point, dynamic viscosity, resilience and elastic recovery of these binders were than performed, and complex shear moduli and phase angles were determined in a dynamic shear rheometer. In order to describe the effect of high temperature on the AR properties, the binders were kept at a temperature of 180 °C for a period of 72 hours. At specific time intervals binder samples were taken and rheological measurements in DSR performed. Properties of the individual AR binders were then compared with the properties of paving bitumen and polymer modified bitumen.
Measuring AR complex shear moduli and phase angles allows monitoring the progress of the reaction (interaction) between paving bitumen and crumb rubber in time. The results could potentially be useful for the development of technologies used to supply asphalt rubber to asphalt mixing plants in bitumen transportation tankers.
