Description
This paper describes the first results achieved in a study concerning the use of Asphalt Rubber Mixtures in Pavement Rehabilitation in Portugal. It concerns the application of a gap graded asphalt mixture in the overlay of cracked asphalt pavements in two road stretches located in the North of Portugal.
In the frame of the co-operation between the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) and the Road Administration (ICERR), a research study was initiated, with the following objectives: a) characterisation of the rubber modified binder and its manufacturing process; b) characterisation of the asphalt rubber mixture; c) study of the long term performance of the pavements overlaid with this type of mixture. The paper deals mainly with the results obtained in items a) and b).
