Description
The aim of the paper is to present a design method for the design of bitumen single stone seal. Single stone seals, normal 9,5 mm and 13,2 mm aggregate, with bitumen rubber as binder has been used in South Africa since the early 1980’s. These stone seals were used for various reasons. Pitfalls on the design with particular emphasis on the practical aspect of the construction of these seals are presented. Finally, the way forward in the design of stone seals, with bitumen rubber as binder is discussed, particularly with regard to obtaining the maximum lifetime out of these seal, especially those used on low traffic-volume roads.
