ABSTRACT. In 2017, semi-wet technology was developed in Spain, revolutionising the use of tyre powder worldwide. RARx.RARx can be considered a highly concentrated, pre-digested, granular rubber bitumen additive or granule that can be added directly to the asphalt mix, thereby modifying its performance and facilitating the use of tyre powder in asphalt. Since then, technical work has been carried out on the product, with important milestones such as its CE marking, its safety data sheet and REACH registration, and its standardisation in many countries, with Spain being an example with NT 02-2020. However, the development of the product’s EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is the most important milestone in terms of sustainability, because it not only certifies and puts the product at the forefront, but has also made it possible to dispel many myths and taboos about the potential sustainability of using tyre powder in asphalt. The EPD for NFVU and RARx powder will be tools for the present and future that enable the sector to offer the administration more sustainable asphalt solutions and allow them to face the current landscape of life cycle analysis without uncertainty.
This paper will present the methodologies used and carry out a life cycle analysis of the different asphalt mixtures, demonstrating a potential carbon footprint saving of more than 20% with the use of Rarx compared to modified bitumens on the market.
