Effects of crumb rubber and shale oil on low-temperature properties of binders

This research evaluates the effects of crumb rubber and shale-oil residue on the low-temperature properties and Superpave low-temperature performance grade of binders. Modeling was performed using a polynomial model and using artificial neural networks. Data were used to model stiffness modulus, relaxation rate and low-temperature grade of binders. Response trace plots point out that the effects of rubber and oil are positive, as the
content increase of both variables acts in the same direction, in order to decrease stiffness, increase m-value and decrease (the absolute value is greater) the low-temperature grade of binders. Crumb rubber is more effective than shale-oil residue in terms of better properties. Surface analyses indicated that there are some compositions of asphalt, rubber and oil that meet Superpave specifications and others that should not be used if a binder with good lowtemperature quality is required.
