Description
This research was carried out by the Universidad de Los Andes and the Instituto de Desarrollo Urbano -IDU from Bogotá D.C. The paper reports the results of the mechanical performance of asphalt rubber mixtures using Colombian asphalt binder. The crumb rubber modifier-CRM was incorporated to the asphalt mixtures using two different methods: mixing the CRM with the aggregates (dry process), and blending the CRM with a bitumen base as
bitumen modifier (wet process). The asphalt binders analyzed were Barrancabermeja- (Barranca) 70/90, Barranca 80/100 and Apiay 60/70. The mechanical characterization of these mixtures was compared with the mechanical behavior of mixtures with Styrene Butadiene Rubber-SBR and Styrene Butadiene Styrene-SBS polymers modified binders-PMBs. The asphalt mixtures were designed using the same grain size distribution. The mixture
designs were based on the mixture performance, having as design parameters the air void content, dynamic modulus and the rutting performance. Laboratory mixture characterization included; fatigue resistance test, rutting test track, behavior due dynamic loads to different frequencies and temperatures, and immersion-compression tests.
